Ancaster since 1974
Ancaster began as a milling settlement in 1792, founded by James Wilson along Ancaster Creek and known briefly as Wilson's Mills before being named Ancaster in 1793. During the War of 1812, the town hosted "The Bloody Assize" — treason trials held at the Old Town Hall in 1814. It was incorporated as a town in 1974 and amalgamated into the City of Hamilton in 2001, though it has kept a strong, distinct community identity since.
